Opinion: Ron Weinberg: Colorado gun bill will deepen inequality in minority communities

As a state lawmaker, I believe one of our highest obligations is to ensure that every piece of legislation we pass promotes fairness, justice, and opportunity.

Unfortunately, Senate Bill 25-003 does the opposite.

This bill, which seeks to ban the sale and transfer of many commonly owned semiautomatic firearms, is being sold to the public as a necessary step toward public safety. But beneath the surface, it introduces a complicated, costly, and punitive system that will disproportionately harm Colorado’s minority communities, particularly those already facing barriers to economic opportunity, access to legal resources, and basic constitutional rights.

Let’s begin with the financial burden.
